Basic infantry division for defense. 15.3W with the Large Unit Tactics doctrine. It can stay the same throughout the game if you use tanks for offense, or you can build it up to an offensive infantry division if you do not want to rely on tanks.

I usually use recon and field hospitals for larger/offensive templates. I would personally remove those to reduce cost if it’s only meant for holding the line. I’d set them to optional and add them once you’d want to expand this division to an offensive role

@SWISH You are right, it is cheaper. Often by 1939 I only have arty, eng and AA, and then as I build up to the offensive division I start adding the recon and the hospital. But, as to the hospital, I must say that also for the line holder it has its advantages. As UK, especially if I annex France through the Benelux Intervention focuses and I need to defend France and its colonies alone (I don't like to use the puppets' divisions), I generally try to get to 1939 with 2x24 armies in the north of France/Belgium, 1x24 army on the Maginot, 1x24 army on the border with Italy, a total of 2x24 armies in Africa to defend Tunisia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Somaliland/Djibuti. That is of course expensive in terms of manpower and during the first year of war, until I get to Service by Requirement and Women in the Workforce, the reduction in losses is helpful, especially if I also want to expand the navy (something that, admittedly, is not necessary).
